Replacing the 18 inch VX800 front wheel with a 17inch front wheel from a GS500e

It has been a well documented modification to replace the 18inch front wheel from the VX800 with an 17inch front wheel from another bike.

One of the donor bikes used has been a GS500e which I understood to be a straight replacement - so when a cheap GS500e wheel appeared on eBay I decided to give it a try. The wheel, from a '92 bike, duly arrived, in dirty but otherwise good condition, the rotor needing replacement (as it was advertised)

View of the right side - note spacer hole in centre

View of the left side - note speed drive gear in centre

The GS500e has the rotor on the right side and and the speedo drive on the left - whereas the VX800 has both on the left - so just turning the wheel round wont work.

However round the centre there is a plastic cover which can be easily removed

Using a screwdriver just lever up and off the plastic cover

To reveal another set of rotor bolts - on the correct left side

Fit on the rotor on the left side

and the plastic cover on the right

There - it fits perfectly with no machining or special parts

The GS500e wheel takes a 110/70 by 17" wheel so the speedo gearing will be wrong - so just fit a GS500e speedo drive to get it right
